  1. I have learned a few things independently in this course but I have not been impressed with the "instruction" because there hasn't been any. I have not done anything in this course thus far that I couldn't have completed from my home.

  13. Course: Guidance and Counseling
    Prof: M. Sellek

Thus far, this course has definitely increased my knowledge for the gifted program and has been engaging as well as interactive. Ms. Sellek exhaust full potential resources and allow every means of peer collaboration. She truly knows her stuff!
The professional learning has indeed met its intended objectives through has on activities, Edmodo assignments and in class peer-presentations.

  14. Guidance and Counseling (Sellek)

The professional development helped me realize that gifted students have their own unique and individual needs. Not just academic support, but personal and emotional support is also needed to help gifted students reach their potential.

The course thus far has demonstrated the characteristics and problems of the gifted. This serves as a basis for counseling and assisting this population of students.

I enjoyed the film component of the course. It relates what teachers do in the classroom to the possible implications outside. I would recommend that the facilities verify that computer or internet connections will be available. It is very hard to do a course based upon articles and online reading when internet connection is not adequate.

  15. I have more knowledge of the affective characteristics and concomitant problems of the gifted, which represent a basis for counseling intervention as part of their program in schools and to gain knowledge of assessment As a result of completion of this inservice activity, I will be able to use strategies appropriate for students with special needs.

To what extent did the professional learning meet its intended objectives? Although we are only half way through the course, it had met many of the intended objectives. The professor provides her first experience knowledge that connects with the different cases and strategies discussed.

    Feedback and suggestions for improvement.
The class is overall enjoyable. I have enjoyed the discussions and insight the professor and other teachers have provided. I, also, enjoy the films that have been tied in to the objectives. However, lack of adequate internet connection (on classroom computers and personal devices) has slowed down the progression of class and what could be done in a few minutes stretches on for close to an hour or more.

  19. Guidance and Counseling

At this point I have learned quite a bit about the different things that make a gifted child tick & how not all gifted students have the same needs & wants. Also, I have learned that gifted students need a lot of emotional support to achieve their potential.

So far the course has introduced us to various ways we can guide & assist different gifted students.

I believe that maybe providing more opportunities to tie curriculum with the guidance and counseling of these students.

  20. The learning has increased my knowledge, though some of what we've covered has been taught repeatedly throughout the courses. The class has met the intended objectives thus far. I am currently certified in English 6-12, and although I have a broad background in reading, this course both refreshed and magnified my knowledge in the area of reading instruction, especially on the elementary level. 33. To what what extent did the professional learning increase your knowledge?
The learning increased my knowledge of how to teach reading, especially in regards to teaching elementary students. Having never taught at a primary school, I never considered how much effort went in it to teaching the basics of reading( such as phonics and irregular words).
To what extent did the professional learning meet its intended objectives?
If the intended objective was to inform me of new teaching techniques, that I would use if called upon to teach the foundations of reading, than I believe the course to be a success!

I believe there is to much material covered in this course, and while I believe I have grasped the key concepts anything else I have probably lost due to an overload of information.

  34. This professional learning course improved my knowledge in phonics and the importance of phonological awareness. I learned that students need the skill of dividing words into syllables because they will encounter longer words as they move up in the grades. I plan to prepare materials to help my students

This course did meet the intended objective because there were new strategies that I learned about each component of reading. I intend to purchase the book to have it as a resource in my classroom to help improve the reading skills of my students.

  38. Read Comp 1 with Dr. Vivian del Rio

1)This course has increased my knowledge of the Big 6, especially in developing strategies to better assist my high school students with vocabulary and comprehension.

2)This PD has definitely met its intended objectives. I keep telling Dr. D that I feel like an expert on reading just by taking her class. I know this is not exactly true but she is obviously teacing me and the rest of "The Lucky 7" a lot for many of us to feel this way.

3)Hopefully, next summer, MDCPS will be able to offer more endorsement classes throughout the entirety of the summer so that educators can have the opportunity to take these classes outside the chaos that is being a student while trying to effectiely teach students.

The instructor and colleagues in my session were outstanding. All of the objectives were met. Colleagues with experience teaching gifted also added insight to events that affected gifted education.
Loved the class and instructor. More movement within the class time, not necessarily breaks, but just get out of the seat activity would be nice. Teachers are not used to sitting for so long!

I think all the professional learning goals and objectives were met in this workshop. The instructor was very knowledgeable and gave us valuable information that we will take with us to the classroom.
I feel that there is not much room for improvement. The activities were very well timed and gave us plenty of opportunities to engage in hands-on activities. It was an extremely interesting workshop.

  41. Nature and Needs of the Gifted is a very informative class. I wish I would have taken it first instead of last. I have grasped a better understanding of different types of gifted students.
All of the intended objectives were met; it provided an overview how the gifted child is evaluated on a national, state and local level. The class went through the history of gifted learners and important events that have effected gifted education. Challenges of gifted students was also addressed in this class.
The activities were wonderful!! The class was not about reading or researching a bunch of articles and then summarizing them (as some of the other endorsement classes are), we had discussions and learned from each other. We watched inspirational movies! The movies were fantastic. Then, we did different activities pinpointing gifted characteristics. We made brochures, we made movie posters, we researched other states and compared their gifted programs to the Florida gifted program. The facilitator was very colorful and did a great job keeping us all engaged and actively learning!

  49. To what what extent did the professional learning increase your knowledge? Taking Nature and Needs for my Gifted Endorsement with Ms. Muller has been so enlightening. I believe that there are so many different characteristics that engulf the gifted child and this course has definitely touched upon these traits. I will definitely empathize with my students going forward, as I have a better understanding of their needs. I will continue to motivate them and try to give them the tools they need in order for them to be able to continue to excel. I believe that my students need to learn to excel in and out of the classroom and by taking this course, I will arm them with the concepts that they can use to achieve their dreams despite the adversities life may challenge them with.
To what extent did the professional learning meet its intended objectives?
Ms. Muller is an extraordinary educator, it is through her life experiences that she compelled all of her students to give their experiences as well and this allows us educators to reap the benefits of this course. The course objectives were met through a multitude of resources as well as films in which enriched our learning by being able to see a role played out of the characteristics that the gifted child may have.
    Feedback and suggestions for improvement.
This is one of those courses, that I believe MDCPS should offer for parents of the gifted child to take, so that they in turn see the reality of the gifted child. Many parents are blindsided by the label of "gifted" and they don't understand the emotional needs of these individuals. Nature and Needs are detrimental to the success of the gifted child, parents need to understand how to foster and bring out the light within these children, instead sometimes they turn them off due to the high demands. Parent Workshops will highly benefit the Gifted Education Program of MDCPS. Not to mention, ESE as well.

We are teachers who just finished 180 days of long days, while it was great to get right into the Professional Learning, it is grueling to spend all day in a room with "short breaks" and then get out just in time to be faced with the horrible traffic. I was able to use my combined knowledge from other classes and cement it together with new info from this class. The instructor's knowledge and experience was evident, and her anecdotes helped make the class informative and enjoyable.

    1. This professional learning experience increased my knowledge by providing me with a wealth of knowledge in certain areas such as misconceptions, characteristics and strategies in dealing with ASD Children.
    2. This professional learning experience met it's intended objectives by providing information that will help me in the upcoming school year to be able to manage and educate more effectively my ASD students.

  69. The Capstones ASD course has been a wonderful experience. Ms. Carbonell does a wonderful job of reviewing all of the material from the previous courses. She is enthusiastic, entertaining and filled with knowledge. She shares many personal experiences that help us better understand the concepts presented. If there are other courses offered that she were the instructor for, I would NOT hesitate to take them! She has managed to make this compromised first week of summer an enjoyable and knowledge filled one.

The Capstone course with instructor Lidia Carbonell has been a positive professional learning experience. Ms. Carbonell is very knowledgeable and knows how to keep us motivated because she is fun and has a sense of humor. The content of the class has provided help for lesson planning and teaching my ASD students. I would recommend Ms. Carbonell for future courses.

    I like Ms. Carbonell’s style,
“Teaching and Entertaining = Learning and Laughing”
    WHAT AN EQUATION!!!
I learned the latest trends in the SPED profession. ASD Endorsement was designed for ASD population, but all I learned I can apply it to my IND students.
Did I mention Ms. Carbonell is very demanding? (Of course, in a positive way). We have to present a complete case study. We learned to write ATIP, BIPS, FABS, analyze behaviors and write goals, accommodations, and strategies. In addition, she bombarded us with very informative ASD videos.
I highly recommend this class to the new educators as well as veterans like me.
In addition to Ms. Carbonnell, I want to express my respects to Ms. Green, Ms. Murray and Ms. Smith for her knowledge and professionalism.

  72. The Nature & Needs of the Gifted (PD) has been a great and learning experience. Mirtha Muller by far is an awesome instructor who teaches with a passion. She is very knowledgeable about the subject matter. This course has taught me how to be more effective in teaching Gifted Students. Also, learning from my colleagues has giving me some ideas. Lastly, the strategies taught in this PD will definitely be implemented in my future classes.

  73. Differentiated instruction is not just teaching to the specific student it has to meet the needs of students via content, process, and product. I really enjoyed my class with Ms. Moton, Reading Competency 4. Learning about the the ongoing assessments, student interests and various strategies will also enhance how I instruct my students in the classroom. This is my best class yet!!!!! I wouldn't change a thing. The experience and wealth of knowledge gained from this class was truly awesome.

  74. The Reading Competency 4 (Differentiated Instruction) Endorsement increased my knowledge exponentially. Up until this point, I had been just going through the motions. This class put a reason and purpose to what I had been doing. It also showed me what can be done better.
In my opinion. the objectives have not only been met but exceeded. Glenda Moton was an amazing hands on facilitator.
The only suggestion that I would have to improve this class would be to make the daily course hours shorter. Ex. Class was 8:30-4:30. I would propose 8:30 to 2:30, even if an additional day has to be added at the end.

  75. Reading Endorsement, Competency 4
    Instructor: Glenda Moton

This class has helped me a lot. I had some knowledge about differentiated instruction, but now I think I have a better picture of what I have to do with my low, average, and high progress students. The instructor yielded the information so clearly and the way she taught the class was like she was putting into practice (modeling) what she was teaching. She handed out what we had to do by the end of the course and allowed us to complete the activities at our own pace. I learned about content, process, and product. I also learned about students' readiness, interest, and preference. I am ready to apply this knowledge in my classes. I will not make any suggestions for improvements because I loved the PD the way it was implemented.

  77. Compentency 4 Differentiate Instruction

The Professional Development increase my knowledge and learning experience. I inquired all the information needed to teach a D.I. classroom, but will do additional research. The instructor was well prepared and had a wealth on knowledge on the subject matter. I have learned plenty of information needed for me to be an effective teacher in a D.I classroom. The objectives were taught with fidelity and consistency. I leaned a lot from my colleagues and would use this information and ideas and implement in my classroom.I really enjoyed the class and would recommended it to other colleagues. The only issue I have with the class is the hours. I believe it should not be held the entire day. The class is too long we should get out of class at least 3:30 p.m. or earlier.

  78. Reading Competency IV with instructor Glenda Moton was engaging and full of information. The instructor was very professional and kept the participants actively involved at all times to ensure that learning was taking place. This course has equipped me with additional strategies that I will be able to incorporate into my classroom. The words Content, Process, and Product will forever be embedded in my thoughts when it comes to differentiated instruction. Student readiness and interest of learners is something I will pay more attention to as a result of this course.
One suggestion is that dismissal time should be 3:00 or 3:30 and not 4:30.

  79. Reading 4 has helped me by introducing new ideas for DI. I plan to use to implement many of the concepts into my class as well as share new concepts with my peers.I appreciate the collaboration but also believe double entries after reading of chapters was not productive and the purpose did not develop my understanding further. The hours for this class were too long and draining in my opinion. I suggest 8:30 to 2:00 and allow for a log in at home to confirm the time required to complete the class. The course can be improved if MDCPS will upgrade their server to handle what is required of employees/teachers and students.

    Ms. Glenda B. Moton

First of all, I would like to take a moment to thank the administration of CPL for the initiative of helping teachers achieve their career goals. Further more, it was a pleasure participating in this course "Reading Endorsement Competency 4" Differentiated Instruction not only the content, support, and activities were on point but the instructor was amazing. This course just implemented what I have been doing in class, so it was a review and encouragement to keep on teaching what I best know. this professional learning has met its intended objectives in the extent that everybody walked out with their individual needs met. My suggestions are about the time, it would have been better if the time was 8:30 AM through 2:30 PM. With the amount of work that we have to produce it becomes overwhelming to grasp the essential at the end of the day because the day is too long. It could be more days but less hours a day.
    Thanks!

    - I would suggest that the director being more sensitive when it comes to teachers that register to take classes through professional development. thirty minutes would not kill anyone. Like last week I have a sick dad that needed to go the doctor, and could not leave early , consequently , he ended up missing his appointment due to rules established by professional development office. you guys have to take into considerations family emergency, Sometimes things happen. This professional learning course has been a great refresher for the "the Big 6" and it's components and applications to the classroom. This course has definitely helped me focus on different aspects and implications of the big 6 while seeing them in action in the classroom through videos and hands-on experiences.
    • To what extent did the professional learning meet its intended objectives?
I believe this course exceeded the expectations I had previously had. I expected more of a lecture-driven course. I am a more hands-on learner and Ms. Clark has definitely made this course more interesting through hands-on activities, independent study time, and group activities.
    • Feedback and suggestions for Improvement . . .
Like some of my other colleagues taking this course, I would've preferred for this course to be dismissed a little earlier and had been assigned work to do at home rather than in class. That way, the hours would balance out and the credit hours will still be met.

  94. To what what extent did the professional learning increase your knowledge?
This professional learning course will positively impact my teaching in the gifted classroom since I have been introduced to many, many theories and creativity/learning strategies that will encourage all of my learners to explore their creativity. I was able to better understand the importance of "creativity and exploration" being weaved into the curriculum.
The professional learning exceeded its intended objectives because it not only provided information and theory, etc., but many opportunities to interact with other professionals and listen to and share ideas on how to implemenet what we were learning in this course and actually use it in the classroom.
As far as feedback and suggestions, I would have liked to have seen more correlations to standards and curriculum in the classroom, and how to weave all these wonderful strategies and theories to encourage and nurture creativity in the classroom.

  98. I learn in this workshop that students need to learn both visible and invisible culture in their instruction. They need to be taught how to recognize socially acceptable behavior and language and when to use this behavior and language. ELL students are at risk for alienation from their peers, misunderstanding by their teachers, and lost opportunities if they are not aware of cultural norms. They need to pay attention to politeness routines, social status, and expressions used in everyday conversations. Students must then identify why certain expressions were used while others were not in various situations. Students must use their gained knowledge when communicating with others. Students must learn when it is appropriate to use certain expressions. They will also need to recognize how each person felt during and after each interaction using nonverbal clues.

The ESOL students should observe communication they see at home, on the bus, in a grocery store, or any public setting. Students could keep a log of what they notice and then bring it to the ESOL classroom so all classmates can discuss their observations. They can also tell about their speaking skills from their own conversations. Students will have multiple opportunities to observe communication. Students will become more aware of sociocultural norms.

    1. The professional development increased my knowledge of the gifted tremendously. I am able to understand, identify and implement strategies for gifted students. 2.This professional learning exceeded my objectives, throught the stategies, and activities that was implemented and presented.
    3. The course was great and I commend the instructor for such an amazing job. It is the first course I have taken in a long while and have enjoyed and felt that I can really use the information to be a better teacher. I do think regular education teachers should take atleast one of these courses to be able to identify and understand gifted children because the misconception that some teachers have is these students have to great academically all around to be identified as gifted.

  118. Theory and Development of Creativity with Ms. Nudd was the best gifted class I have attended. We learned about the different theorists and how their ideas can be translated into tangible creative lessons we can actually use with our students. It absolutely met the expectations of us bringing creativity and higher order thinking into the classrooms. I have never taken a course where I learned more and can concretely use the information given. Ms. Nudd should train all the future instructors of this course.

  123. I feel that the PD helped me understand a bit more of the needs of the Gifted students in my class. It helped me see reasons they may not be as engaged with some material as they are with other material and helped me realize how to recognize that and to work and adjust my methods accordingly.

On a scale of 1-10, I would give it around a 7. A lot of time was focused on the history of the gifted program and not so much on the actual NEEDS of the gifted students or on strategies to use to help meet those needs.

No immediate feedback other than this.

    ReplyDelete
  124. To what what extent did the professional learning increase your knowledge?
-The professional development on the gifted was very interesting to me. My knowledge on the gifted has definitely grown, as well as my understanding of the different populations. I think that much of the course centers on a lot of gifted 'theory' and not enough on how to apply it in the classroom. The Creativity class is possibly the most interesting one and the one that I will be taking the most out of. After creativity, probably the Populations class has the most to offer. Those two courses seem to me to be the most diverse and interesting. The other three, Nature/Needs, Counceling, and Curriculum, blend in so much. It seems like its the same information over and over. There hasn't been anything in those classes that make them stand out or any new knowledge that differentiates them in my mind.

To what extent did the professional learning meet its intended objectives?
-They met the objectives of giving me a better understand of the gifted and their own unique situations and differences within the group.

    Feedback and suggestions for improvement.
-Think the Gifted Endorsement can definitely be cut down. You don't need 5 classes to understand the ideas, content, and strategies that we get out of these courses. Many I believe can be blended together, such as nature and needs with special populations. Curriculum and creativity could also be taught together. That way we get full experiences within the classes and a better understanding of the curriculum.

  125. 1.To what what extent did the professional learning increase your knowledge?
The professional learning Nature and Needs course helped me better understand the diversity of gifted students. It taught me that although many of them may be gifted in some areas they might not be as quick of a learner on other areas. Also due to pressures of fitting into the typical gifted mold, many students may in fact underachieve in school even more so than we could have ever imagined or expected.
2.To what extent did the professional learning meet its intended objectives?
Thus far, I feel more knowledgeable to the Needs of the Gifted I have truly enjoyed this class and the teacher of the course Mr. R. Paula was very well versed in the strategies that could be used to both challenge and motivate the students.
    3.Feedback and suggestions for improvement.
One main suggestion is to have more of these courses available, particularly during the summer when we have more time to fully dedicate our attention to the information being given.

    1. Competency 4 increased my knowledge of how to implement effective differentiated instruction. Mrs. M. Rodriquez made the course engaging bysharing both researched based strategies and practical strategies she's used in her class. Each meeting was filled with relevant information and hands on activities which helped give the class a better understanding of the content. This is by far the BEST competency course that I have taken. To improve any professional development it would be nice to have the handouts or power points available ahead of time so that everything is not a cold read. There was a lot of information to be shared in 7 days and I'm sure once I review my notes, I will have additional questions.

  138. I have just completed the Reading Competency 2 course. As a high school teacher, basic reading instruction is not necessarily something that is on the forefront as I plan curriculum, but due to the information in this course I have learned tools to incorporate these strategies right into existing lessons. The instructor did a fantastic job incorporating current research as support for the learning strategies taught in class. I truly enjoyed this course and have a whole new toolbox of strategies to use in my classroom. The only improvement I would make is to limit the amount of lengthy tangents that attendees tend to go off on. Brief ones tend to be informational and typically helpful, but there were just a couple times it went for too long.
